Hi Rick,
Enjoyed your website. Heres a pic of my car after taking a turn at 70+mph, sliding off the road, hitting a tree and landing upside down. I had my seat belt on, thankfully, and walked away with a small bruise from the seat belt and a couple of small scratches on my palm. I was very intoxicated and dont even remember most of it.
I think its about time we start going after the people who make and serve alcohol. There are so many people who dont even plan on driving after they have consumed a heavy amount of alcohol and find themselves in this position. Alcohol is a very powerful substance which is extremely easily accessible to almost anyone. The fact that bars can even serve people who more than likely drove there is unfathomable.

Hi,
My name is Ashley and I'm 24. I have visited your site a bunch of times over the past year or so. I am so thankful for what you do and I read some of the emails that were sent to you and alot of people have been affected by what you have posted on your website. So here goes my long story. It's going to be long so kind of bare with me LOL. When I was 21 years old I was going down the Natchez Trace in Mississippi and if you know it sometimes it can be deserted unless you're near a town. Well I had my 2 year old with me at the time and I noticed a van in front of me kind of going all over the road. He almost hit a car head on (i thought it was a woman) and he almost hit a bridge. I honked my horn, I flashed my lights, I even tried getting beside him but he almost ran me off of the road. I couldn't take that chance anymore with my 2 year old in the car with me. So I backed off a little and just started praying. I couldn't call 911 b/c I didn't have a cell phone at the time. I just started praying. I didn't know what else to do. I was the only vehicle. None behind me and none coming toward me which was a good thing. I followed this guy I know 30 miles. Then I saw a car coming. All I could do was keep praying then the van started going into the other lane. I slowed down praying that he would run off the road. That he would just keep going but he didn't and the little blue car didn't react in time and they hit head on. B/c when the blue car finally realized the van was coming she jerked and when she jerked the old man jerked at the same time. My daughter was asleep so all i knew was to get out and see what I could do. I didn't know CPR or first aid, but I needed to do something. So i get out and the old man is hollering help me, help me. I told him I'm right here with him but I've got to go check on the other car. I go over there and it was a site that made me sick. I thought they were dead. I didn't know what to do so I just went over there to the old man. I didn't want to holler b/c I didn't want to scare him anymore. So I just sat there and told him help was on the way. I wasn't sure when the next vehicle would come along. Well about 10 mins a man pulled up and he was a RN. So I let him take over. Then it seems like there were hundreds of cars around. The man called 911 and the fire trucks and the ambulance and park ranger got there. She asked me a bunch of questions and when I tried to explain to her what happen she keeps saying are you sure. I'm like yeah I watched the whole thing. They hit so hard it turned the blue car going back in the other direction that they just couldn't believe it. I was upset but when I found out that the driver of the blue car was gone I lost it. I guess the reality and someone professional telling me, I guess it just sunk in. They got the passenger of the blue car out and she was still alive. She later died at the hospital. Come to find out the driver had fell asleep at the wheel. He was an 80 something year old doctor! The two elderly ladies were in their 70's. The guilt I felt was overwhelming. I couldn't drive home after the accident and a lady from the sheriff's department had to drive me and my daughter to my job. It took me a while just to drive and to be able to travel anymore. That happened Nov 2005.
I have always been a cautious driver. Ever since that wreck I hated to see old folks on the road. I started volunteering for MADD about 1 1/2 ago. My father-in-law is an alocholic and has had 3 DUIS with no jail time except to sober up. Well on Sunday April 19,2009 I witnessed the unthinkable once again. I was on my way to pick up a friend and her son for church. My daughter is now 6 and she was in the vehicle with me. This time she wasn't asleep and seen it. A white pick up truck lost control on a 4 lane hwy he hit a patch of gravel and jerked. I thought he was going to hit the car in front of me but instead he hit the concrete part of the bridge head on. Slid down it and finally went about 8 feet away from the bridge and went down a hill. I pulled over and told my daughter to stay in the truck and mama would be right back. My nieces were behind me in another car and I looked back to make sure they were pulling over so they could take care of her. This time I was trained in CPR. I took the class a year ago and am taking a class in college for an easy A. I just started running. I was halfway down the hill and I stopped. I saw no one in the truck and I hesitated. I looked around and noticed that I didnt see any bodies lying around so I went to the truck. I crossed a ditch and by the time I got to the drivers side door someone was opening it. I looked in and I saw 2 guys. The driver was lying in the passenger seat and the passenger was leaning over into the driver seat. The only thing still in it's place was their legs and their butts. My nieces started running toward me and I told them to get back to the truck with my daughter and do not come down there. The driver was still alive. His breathing was hard but we knew he was still alive. I checked the pulse of the passenger and he had a pulse, which was strong. They were both knocked out. The driver I believe had brain injury. He finally came too but was unresponsive to any questions I asked. His face was twice the size of what it should have been. He had a cut on his head and it was starting to swell. The passenger never came to while I was there. They had no seat belts on and there were two empty beer cans in the floorboard. He was older gentleman maybe late 40's early 50s and the passenger looked about my age. The ladies in front of me said he was flying. I never saw the white truck until it lost control. Other people pulled up and that truck had passed them and they said they know he had to have been going at least 100 when he passed them and saw them throw out a beer out the window. I can only assume about the drinking and driving. But speeding and no seat belts played a part in their wreck and how they are injured. When the paramedics got the driver out he was combative kicking, and trying to sit up. Then I finally saw the blood coming out of his ear. I never saw it when I was there with him. And this time I had others around me that were helping me with them. One sat with the passenger while I sat with the driver. The passenger they worked on him to get him stable b4 they got him out. This time I don't know the outcome of their situation. All I know is what it has done to me.
You know the families are greatly impacted by something so tragic but also the innocent people that share the roads with him. Thank God I wasn't involved or anybody else and this time it was a one car wreck. I have been traumatized by 2 peoples stupid decisions. The people that are witnesses to these things and the ones that decide to get out and help are affected too. I just wish these idiots would realize this. Right now my daughter only knows there was a wreck and mama went to help. My truck was right there and she saw them take the guys out but I guess she hasn't realized what has happened. I made a decision to get out and help regardless of the situation and this time the guilt didn't overwhelm me, it was the anger. I can only assume the drinking and driving until I can get some information or if i ever get any information. I don't know what happened to them. I'm not sure if they survived or not. I went to school that Monday and I went to my First Aid teacher and I asked him how do you get over something like this. He said you talk about it. So I went back into class and I shared my story. Not because of what I did, (which was basically nothing at both occassions) I wanted them to realize (since most are 18) that whatever decisions they make when they get behind the wheel not only affects them, their passengers, their families but it affects innocent ppl like me and my 6 year old daughter. I wanted them to realize what kind of impact it had on me. I hoped it work and thats all I can do. I'm going to school to be an x-ray tech. RN, EMT, Law Enforcement, I think I know why those fields scare the heck out of me. I thank you for what you do b/c someone like me can't do it. I don't know how you do it but I know you have to have great strength and great mental capabilities to see some of the things yall see.
Again thank you from the bottom of my heart for trying to get others to realize this is not okay. If you read all the way to the bottom of this I thank you for taking time to read my story. Ashley F. in MS
Officer Rick,
As I have already sent you a short paragraph for your guestbook, I want to let you know that I once had a great nephew who had a twin. They were identical twins and no-one could tell them apart. (I will call them Darrel and Harold which are not their real names). You couldn't keep these kids apart; that's how close they were to one another. They did everything together. But, one day, Harold was occupied with family and Darrel decided to go see his close friend, Scott, at Scott's house. Scott's parents weren't home. Darrel and Scott began drinking and they departed the house. Darrel was driving his used SUV, but was not drunk. Scott talked Darrel into letting him drive. Darrel stopped the vehicle and climbed in the rear window of the SUV and sat on top of the spare tire because their other friends filled the other seats. From what I understand, everyone was drinking at this time and Scott decided to drive out toward the lake which was on a very curvy road. By this time, darkness had set in. Scott increased his speed, striking a couple of guard rails, missed the curve and struck a tree head-on traveling at approximately 70 - 75 mph. The tree they hit sat about 30 feet from a residence and the family called 911. (If the tree had not been there, the vehicle would have gone through the house.) After speaking with a good friend who was a Deputy Sheriff at that time, he said Darrel was laying outside the vehicle already dead when he arrived on the scene. Come to find out, Darrel's neck and back were broken. Everyone died except Scott and the Deputy Sheriff said he, himself, couldn't understand how Scott survived. The front of the vehicle was "wrapped" around the tree and had to be extracted. Darrel was but a teenager and had his whole life ahead of him. But, it makes me feel better to know that Scott is serving time for his mistake in prison. The mother of Darrel, my niece, keeps that tree "decorated" year-round in memory of Darrel. Every time people pass that tree, they remember what happened that night.
Because Darrel was very popular in the local schools, I do believe that 75% of the students in the school system were present for his funeral. But, Harold, Darrel's brother, does not drink to this day. I certainly thank God for this.
May God have a blessing for your website and job!
Thank you for this opportunity to inform via email.

Fatal DUI Crash
Thanks to April who lost her husband for this story and pictures. April's Story
My neice sent me the link to this website and I saw where people were telling there story. So. here's mine, the 60 seconf version.
Long time ago DUI's were called DWI's, driving while intoxicated. I was 16yo and my husband was 20yo and we had a 5 month old baby girl, this was in 1973. We were with a group of friends and everyone was drinking or drunk but me, my husband and probably a few others were sober. Everyone decide to pack up and take the party to another place. A friend of my husband was going to drive with his wife and 2 kids, this guy wouldn't give up his keys. My husband stepped in, told me to take his wife and kids and he would ride with this friend. The deal was my husband was going to convince his friend to hand over the keys at some point, so my husband drive them both safely to the next destination.
The two, my husband and the friend took off and I being an inexperienced driver couldn't keep up with them. The friend was showing out and driving at a very high rate of speed. We were heading out farther into a rural area where the roads curved and dipped. At some point an ambulance had passed me, me not knowing where it was heading. i eventually came up on the wreck. The vehicle hit a bridge embuttment* (culvert) flew into the air, at that point the floor board of the vehicle was tore off the vehicle and the drunk friend fell out through the floor, to his safety. The vehicle stay airborn for 90?? feet, hit the ground and skid an additional 70??, then the engine came loose and flew another 45??. My husband being sober, held on for dear life. He didn't die instantly. The vehicle was so far off the road into a corn field I couldn't see it.
They manage to get him into the ambulance and I begged to be able to ride with them. I threw my car keys to a stranger and headed to the hospital not even thinking he was dying the friend had bumped his head and was treated at the scene. I have no clue how the friend and his wife and kids got home. That is another story. Once at the hospital I remember calling my Mother-in-law and telling her that her son had been into a wreck. She had asked what was wrong and i said i thought maybe he had broke his leg. She had my daughter so when she arrived it wasn't much longer when the doctor came out and asked for me and told me he was gone. At 16yo I asked "where did he go". My mother-in-law bodily hit the floor and I knew what the doctor meant. He didn't look bloody, it was all internal, she died of shock from massive internal injuries.
To cut to the chase in the story and my point. They did nothing to the guy that was drunk and driving the car. His life didn't change, he bought another car and had his wife and kids, because my 20yo husband and I had the right mind to protect the friends family from him. It has been 34 years and I have never seen those people again nor do I know anything about the lives they got to lead. I was never approached, sought out to thank me and or to apologize for my loss. I hope that this family's lives were spared for a reason. MY life was changed forever and to this day I think of what my life would have been like if I had my husband with me now. Instead of all the struggles I had to manage due to his absence. I did remarry and lived a full life. I have always manage to when I could to preach my spill about staying home, drink and party all you want, but do not drive. My daughter is now the senior case manager at the state prison, I as she has a hand at making things right for losing her father. It is a minimum to medium security prison. She sees a lot of DUI repeat offenders and she has no mercy.
Life does go on for the ones left behind but the day he died and the time to this day still takes my breathe away. I have never let it pass without actually watching the clock as the exact time he died comes and goes. I still miss him so and I am proud of how he took responsibility to keep another mans family safe. I just wonder if they ever spoke of him in appreciation of the sacrifice he made and what I was up against as a very young widow.
I can't express how we all take the life we are given for granted. When you decide to party always plan where and how it's going to happen. Make it clear to all involved that this is a rule that vehicles are not included in the agenda. Have a good time and stay put.
Sincerely Serious Survivor.... Michelle

Thanks to Pam for the following story and pictures.
My name is Pam, I lived through a drunk hitting me at 60 mph, I was traveling at 40mph.
first picture is of the drunks truck, then my bronco, hard to tell what it is.I was in intensive care for 4 days, after being Lifeflighted to the hospital, it took 72 min. to cut me out of the wreck. I spent 11 days total in the hospital and 3 months in a wheel chair from the injuries. Picture 1Picture 2Picture 3
Thanks to Keven for this story and pictures.
This was the first love of my life. She was drinking and driving nearly 65mph on a small, 2 lane, neighborhood road when she didn't turn fast enough and lost control and hit a telephone pole sideways. In the top photo you can see where the only point of impact was directly in the driver's side door completely missing the dashboard and any support columns. The pole pushed her and her entire seat into the passenger area. She was wearing her seat belt, but even that can't always save you. I just found your website and wanted to submit these in hopes of helping even one person. This happened to her when I was only 18. I am now a police officer and enforce seatbelt laws and DUI stops very rigidly.

Thanks to Margaret for the following story about how her 15 year old daughter was killed by a drugged up driver and how her son was seriously injured by him. There is also a link to the site Margaret made for her daughter with photo's and also the background of the driver that killed her. Really amazing how our so called "legal system" lets repeat offenders back out onto our streets.
That horrible phone call every parent fears...
Hi Rick,I have e-mailed you several times in the past. I to ride a motorcycle. I work as a Recovery Investigator, in Florida. I was on my way to work this morning around 4:00A.M. I was cut off by a small red Dodge Neon, It pissed me off so I followed the car a short distance, and immediately realized that she was very drunk. I called the FHP with a bolo, and then we were both on I-75 headed south, she sped up to about 90 mph and I fell back, she then slowed down to about 35mph, I caught up to here again and called in another bolo. There were no other vehicles in site, just here and I . I was hauling a repoed Dodge Ram 2500. All of a sudden out of
nowhere came a Chevy Lumina coming like a bat out of heel headed north in the southbound lane. There was no way to avoid the crash, I slammed on my brakes and cut off to the grassy area to my right. The vehicles hit head on and neither one touched their brakes. The northbound car spun around clockwise in front of me, and the Neon bounced back about 40 feet. When we all finally came to a stop, I was only 1 foot from the northbound car. Both vehicles caught fire immediately. I backed up as far as I could and then got the traffic warned and stopped. I went to the driver of the Neon and could not get a pulse, then went to the Lumina, he was alive but trapped. I used up my fire ext. trying to keep the fire out of the inside of his car, a Sheriff dept. got there and together we cut off his seatbelt and pulled him from the burning wreckage, he did get some burns, as the fire was intense. We then tried the same on the girl in the Neon, There was no way to get her out, the car was too badly mangled. Help finally arrived and we got the girl out with the jaws of life, she got a pulse back after we got her out, but it is very doughtful she will survive. Come to find out both people were dead drunk, and the sole occupants in the vehicles. We still cant figure out how he was going northbound in the southbound lanes, as the interstate at that point has guardrails in the median. My vehicle got covered with antifreeze and pieces of debris, thats how close I was to the vehicles when we all came to rest. Sadly enough , both people died in the helicopter on route to the hospital, I have never witnessed two vehicles slamming into each other head on before. The amount of kinetic energy that has to be displaced is
unbelievable. It was just like and explosion. I was interviewed by the traffic homicide guys. After all that was done the
vehicles were already loaded on roll backs and leaving the scene. It would have been difficult to take a photo without the graphic stuff in it, looked like a war zone in the middle of the highway. I never realized just how fast theses things happen and how violent they really are. What a shame, two young lives lost in the blink of an eye, and all because of booze. I managed to get a pic of one of the cars. This was a Dodge Neon. This was taken at the towing yard, I could not get a pic of the other car involved, as it was still inside the garage, impounded awaiting further investagation. I will try to get you a pic of it in a couple weeks. I will tell you one thing, after watching this crash unfold in front of me, I will not have even a couple beers and drive again. You just never know. One thing that amazed me was just how fast it happened. Within a nano second, complete and total destruction, causing massive injuries resulting in death within a few short agonizing minuets. You know alot of people stop by and view your site, and hopefully it sinks in. If people could see what I saw after they hit, believe me it would sink in then!!! I really like your site, I cant imagine how much work it is to set up and keep updated.

HI there, I just wanted to let you know that I will be letting my 16 yr old daughter see these pictures as she is about to take her driving test. She has told me of some of her friends that have been drinking and driving, and I tell her she will not get in trouble if she were to call me from a party and ask me to pick her up. I'd rather have a drunk teenager to bring home then to have to visit a morgue to identify her body. I really appreciate the time you've put into this website.
My husband was in an accident in January of this year and my daughter learned from that how important seat belts are. He did over 15,000 worth of damage to my Ford Expedition. He fell asleep behind the wheel and went off the road into a deep embankment, and if he hadn't gotten out of the vechile and walked over a mile (in 18degree weather) to call me, he wouldn't of been seen from the road. He has a small scar that took 9 stitches to sew up after the accident, and I think that even though the airbag didn't deploy, he was still very lucky to walk away from this. I was never so grateful for seatbelts. I'm glad that we still have him here with us. Accidents aren't fun, and if anyone can learn anything from your websites then I'm am forever grateful for that.
Thank you again, for taking the time to come up with this site. If you would like to see pics of my vechile after the accident, that took 2 wreckers to get it out, I'd be more than happy to send them to you. Sincerely, Cindi Grossie, Conneticut

While this next picture has absolutely nothing to do with DUI, it does show what stupid things people will try to do when they don't wish to go to jail. My friend Chris Kirby is a photographer with a news agency and once worked in my home town for our local news paper. He took this picture as someone that was high on drugs attempted to take a deputy's gun. Click here for the story and picture. More pictures and stories from Chris are coming.
Thanks to Michelle who sent these pictures of a vehicle in which a friend was seriously injured when it was hit by someone that was not drunk, but rather high on drugs. Unfortunatly, the friend was not wearing seatbelts. Notice the amount of damage to the steering wheel which was done when her body hit it. Seatbelt would have stopped her from hitting the steering wheel. Click here for more information about the wreck along with the pictures.

1st is a driver with blood/alcohol reading of .186%. This was an old late 1970's Toyota station wagon registered to carry 4
persons. There were 4 adults (3 female & 1 male driver) and 7 children aged 3 months to 11 years in the car. The driver lost
it on a roundabout & the car flipped. A kid in the rear sustained a fractured skull. The driver was charged with dangerous
driving causing grievous bodily harm to the passenger whilst adversely affected by alcohol. He was found guilty by a jury after
15 minutes and jailed for 2 years. Picture

On the morning of May 10, 1998, Officer Thomas Adams began his shift like any other morning. This day was ordinary for about thirty minutes then a drunk driver struck Officer Adams head on while Adams was on patrol. Adams suffered injuries to his knee, but I am happy to say the city of Nettleton, Ms, still has the advantage of having Thomas Adams on their Police Force.
